January 2018 - Winter On The Street
There was much anticipation as we arrived for our January Competition night. Winter on the Street was the Theme and members had been using over the previous 2 weeks out taking photos and searching the archives to find their best picture. In all 28 wonderful images were on display, across all three grades – images of the local area in recent weeks or previous winters when we had a covering of snow and some images came from faraway places with snow being the icing on the cake!
The competitions team headed up by George O’Keeffe have done a huge amount of work on the new voting system over the past few months. Everybody agreed that the best photo’s won so well done to Finbarr, Louise and Deirdre who collated all the marks on the night. The first rosettes of 2018 go to: Grade 1 & 1st overall Tom Quish who is keeping up the high standard he set in 2017. Grade 2 and 2nd overall is Louise Howard with a stunning image from a trip to the USA a few years ago. 3rd overall was Finbarr O’Hanlon who gave us a few tips on how he achieved his lovely image. Grade 3 winner was Deirdre Casolani who acknowledged the ‘dodge and burn’ advice from the ever helpful Helen at Frank Morgan Photography. The photo of the presentation of rosettes took place in front of our new backing board – thanks to Deirdre Casolani for designing and organising the printing.
In a new departure there was a critique from the four POTY judges by chairman Mark Heffernan. This is another very positive development for our club members and we can all learn from the comments and suggestions of our colleagues.
Our next club meeting will be on 13th February when we have a visit from Paul Reidy, renowned Portraiture photographer from Cork who recently facilitated a workshop for club members. Paul will give us an insight into how he approaches portraiture and some tips on processing those images.
The national finals of the IPF Nature Photographer of the Year takes place on 17th February in Talbot Hotel, Carlow. A number of members have qualified and if anyone is interested in going along to support them please contact the outings committee who will be arranging car pooling.
Our annual Macro Workshop took place on Sunday 21st January with over 20 members participating. A special word of thanks to those who brought exhibits and demos which ranged from old dolls to sea shells, pears to flowers and clinking wine glasses to dropping fruit.
Our next club competition is on 27th February and the theme is ‘Your Choice’ this is a projected competition so now’s your chance to let us see your style and surprise us with your favourite image. Another opportunity to have fun with photography.
